BIT Parts: Extras 3

In this edition of BIT Parts Extras, Jolyn Janis (Agent Zero) shares with us a memory from her childhood that involves her mom and Tetris.

Did your parents ever discover a game and then take over the household console? Share your childhood gaming memories with us. We’d love to hear your stories!

BIT Parts Sweded

We wanted to show you what BIT Parts would look like without funding. With the help of our lead actors, Jolyn Janis and Brian Villalobos, as well as Jason Vines (actor and special effects make-up guru), we created “sweded” versions of BIT Parts — which is, BIT Parts with no money.

God of War

Star Fox

If you like these sweded versions, we have 2 new reward levels on our Kickstarter campaign (click here). For $30, you can get a sweded ringtone of your favorite video game song. Or, for $125, you can request a swede. Tell us the game, and we’ll make a no-budget short based on it.

BIT Parts: Extras 2

We are approaching the last 2 weeks of our Kickstarter campaign for BIT Parts and we have some fun stuff we are going to be sharing with everyone as we ramp up to the end. A lot you might not know that much about Blue Goggles Films and our team, so today, we are starting a little series where a few of us get together and talk about our earliest video game memories. In this video, Ben Moody (writer/director), Jolyn Janis (Agent Zero) and Brian Villalobos (Agent One) start it off.

1 Million Views and Counting …

When we decided to “go for broke” and make a short film each month in 2012, we honestly didn’t know what to expect. The main reason for taking on this challenge was to continue learning and growing as filmmakers, and we started meeting such awesomely talented people in 2011, we wanted to continue working with them. This year has not disappointed on any of those fronts.

We started feeling the mid-year slump this summer. When you are always thinking ahead to the next production, you tend to forget about previous accomplishments. We’ve filmed 9 shorts in 9 months so far … that’s something to be proud of!

So, to help boost our spirits and keep perspective on what we’ve done this year, we decided to start keeping a tally of our total views. We are only counting the actual shorts (not the behind-the-scenes or update videos). This week, with the help of our latest episode of De-Pixelated (Super Smash Bros. Brawl), we broke the 1 million view mark!

We can’t believe how lucky we’ve been to find such amazing people to be part of our team. With each new short, we get to meet even more people and let’s just say, we love our Blue Goggles family. We can’t thank them enough for putting up with our insane filming schedule, long shoots and limited budget. We could not have even come close to 1 million views (let alone completing 9 shorts) without them.

It’s been a fantastic year so far … here’s to the next million views!

Blue Goggles Update: 8/1/12

Take a sneak peek at the stunt training and choreography for the upcoming August episode of De-Pixelated!

The best laid plans …

We are halfway through 2012 and still going strong on our goal of making a short film each month. It’s been an insane ride so far, but we love it and learn something new with each production.

One of the things we try really hard to do is plan ahead and get as much done before the actual shoot date so that we aren’t wasting anyone’s time and to keep our small productions running as smoothly as possible. And, despite the pre-planning, there are certain elements that are out of our control and we were humbly reminded of that a couple weekends ago when we were filming the August episode of De-Pixelated.

As you can see in the picture above, ominous clouds were creeping in before sundown. But, being Texas, a thunderstorm typical comes and goes in under 30 minutes, so we were all hopeful it wouldn’t effect our overnight shoot schedule.

The location is an old building on the campus of the Austin Supported Living Center and it has no electricity and quite a few holes in the windows and roof. We were using generators to run lights outside of the building as well inside. Only a couple hours into filming, the sky opened up and poured … and poured … and poured. We waited it out for 2 hours hoping it would stop, but it wasn’t moving and with lightening on top of the downpour, we didn’t want to test our luck by running the generators and lights in the storm.

At 2 am, we called the shoot off and went home. Thankfully, with the help of Cecilia Cavuto from the Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services and Lindsey Ashley from the Texas Film Commission, they were able to offer us the next Saturday to come back for filming. And, our excellent cast and crew were ready and willing to come back and give up another Saturday night to the production.

Our second go at it was a huge success. The weather cooperated and everything ran smoothly. When faced with challenges like having to reschedule an overnight shoot in only one week, it makes us truly appreciate being filmmakers in Austin where people are so quick to help out and get everything in place despite the short turnaround.

So, thanks to everyone who pitched in and help us get our August episode filmed. It looks awesome and we can’t wait to share it with the world (keep an eye out for it mid-August)!
